Excellent article, thanks for sharing. When it comes to engine technical expertise, Kevin Cameron is one of the best motorcycle journalists in the world.

Howdy! I am looking for top motorcycle brands for my brother. Actually he is very fond of bikes and now he wants to buy one and sought my help. I just know Harley Davidson. Which other brands are famous?

Sean, I'm sure all of the brands that are older than a few years have their famous and infamous models. Figure out what type of bike he wants (cruiser, sport/super/hyperbike, naked/standard, touring, muscle bike, etc etc ) , then look at different brands to see which one tickles his fancy.

Too hard to pin down what is, and what a person thinks - is "famous". for example, current H2/H2R will be famous, early Vmax bikes are famous, late 60's to early to mid 70's Kawasaki's are "famous". Honda's 90's cbr 600 f bikes are famous, late 90's to mid 2000 gsxr's are famous. the first busa is famous, our current zx14r is famous, early Indians, thruxton's, Triumph's, are famous. the first gen zx10r is famous, so is the kawi 636 for bucking the trend and going bigger cc's. First gen FZ1 I would consider famous. Leno's y2k jet bike is famous, almost any ducati is famous. BMW adventure bikes are famous. I could go on and on.

Some are rare, some set a new performance standard, some won in racing, some just run forever, some are what every wanna be biker dreams of. Some just hit the price/performance mark and outsell everyone else. All have appeal in their own way.

If your post wasn't trolling, tell your brother to:
1- set a budget
2 - decide where - why + how, he will be riding
3 - decide if he can work on his own bike, or will have to pay someone to maintain a bike. (this would help decide if older bikes might be viable).
4 - check on insurance
5 - buy gear
6 - take a msf course and get a license or learners permit.
7 - try and sit on, or demo ride as many bikes as he can to figure out what he CAN ride.
8 - buy a bike. if he doesn't have much, or any experience, I suggest a smaller motor used bike. chances are it will get dropped or have a minor fall. It might be just turning a corner, or something silly like not getting your foot down just right at a light; but it does happen.
9 - ride the piss out of it, and have fun.
